『「當代民主政治的延續與變遷」是一門偏質性研究的課，主要的教學方向是引導同學去看到「民主」這個普遍卻眾說紛紜的詞是如何被並定義出來的，以及有什麼樣的制度變項會影響一個國家與上述定義之間的距離。在教學方式上，老師在前幾週會請同學選一個想觀察的國家，並使用Freedom House和V-dem等測量民主指標的網站去練習蒐集並分析資料。並每週上台針對不同面向介紹自己案例的民主發展。期中後會安排韓國的學者演講，進行交流。接近期末時，當同學對民主的概念和實務有系統的認識後，便會開始討論有些國家的民主何以失敗，以及國家的角色在這中間對選民造成的影響。
總體而言我在這門課中有三個收穫。第一是提升了英文簡報的口語表達能力（老師在簡報前會安排時間請國際生幫我們驗收，盡力準備就好）；第二是找到了一些有趣的切入點去思考問題（例如，對民主總有談到爛的感覺，那我們就可以談談什麼是非民主）；第三是讓我對談民主何以失敗的議題或書本比先前更有興趣接觸。因為到課堂最後，總會有個體悟。在大聊民主的制度面向時，可以回頭過來看看所以作為民主基石的「人民」是如何看待自己所處的制度？這和民主是否能「延續」有最直接的連結。很推薦同學修這門課，一起提升學術和英文簡報的能力！』

This course will introduce students to the voluminous literature on democracy, democratization, and development. It will sharpen students’ understanding of the basic principles, theories, conceptual tools, and comparative methods. After going over concepts and measurements of democracy and democratization, this course will cover the structural factors of democratization, democratic consolidation, and decay. Then, this course will compare policy outcomes between democracies and non-democracies as well as within democracies. Finally, the last weeks of the course will turn to the future prospects and challenges for democracy and democratization around the world.
